Mikaela picked up on the footsteps coming down the hall. She picked up her head and looked to the doorway. Connor stood there with a silly smile on his face. She couldn’t help, but smile back. “What are you smiling at?” she teased as he made his way around her. Arms wrapped around her waist and she felt his face snuggle into her shoulder.
She turned to look at Connor at his comment. A sad smile upon her face, “You shouldn’t tease him so. I feel like we tease him enough being with near each other. He has every right to be temperamental…” Mikaela could picture the look on Jake’s face as he watched Connor and her exchange affectionate looks and touches. She could see the tears glisten in his eyes before turning away to hide the hurt. Mikaela truly felt sorry for him. Just the thought of losing Connor made her chest ache.
Mikaela pressed her lips to the top of Connor’s head. “Just be easy on him…” she whispered into his hair. She kept her mouth shut, because she nearly said ‘You were almost in his position…’ Though Mikaela didn’t even have bruises or scars left from when the vampire attacked her, the memories were still fresh in her mind. Blood pumping through her veins as she fought for her life and had Connor not come in time, he would have finished her. And she had a feeling it would be worse than drowning in her own blood.
She smiled weakly at Connor before turning to Jake in the doorway. Mikaela watched as Jake kneeled nearby, eyes on his daughter, who was quite close to slipping into dreams. “It’s a gift…” Mikaela said softly, an almost brag. Her eyes falling back to the young girl in her arms.
