Donovan cast her look at the use of his full name and kept it on her. Tracking her with his gaze, he watched as she moved around the room, sampling the feel of the supple fabric with her fingers and moving deeper into its darkened expanse. She moved through a beam of moonlight peeking through the window causing Donovan’s gaze to finally pull away. Shutting the door gently he crossed the room to the window and lightly pulled the curtain more to the side.
The landscape his home opened up around him. Beyond the houses in disrepair and the streets in even worse condition, he could see the outskirts of the city all the way to the horizon. It was all dark as things had gone so many years ago. Yet as Donovan watched he could remember the night lights of a city. He could remember the shifting eyes of a car as it went down the street. Civilization was a thing missed and it would be a long time before it rose again, that was for sure.
Donovan chuckled at her next question and finally turned away from the outside with a smile on his lips. “Mate? Samantha and I are not mates. We just find a mutual advantage in tending to each others intimate needs. I haven’t had a mate in a long time.” He revealed to her with a gaze hiding his thoughts. Jezebel came to mind at the words but that was too private a detail to go into just yet. He knew the woman had come back and was in the city, most likely bringing more notice to herself. A talk about her wouldn’t come up until a lot later he hoped. However, Celest knew he’d had a mate before and now she’d be curious. He supposed he’d shot himself in the foot on this one.
