The first the Ra’Lane did once he setup in the NYCL, was picking a room for him to use a base of operations, including all research, and where he would eat and sleep. He kept it simple, and removed all unnessary furniture, leaving him with a desk, and a bed made of long leather as padding and some cloths as sheets. Not that he ever used his bed much, had only slept for a few hours since his arrival and completion of his new headquarters, which had been three days ago. The first thing he had decided to read, after much searching, was a dictionary. Most important thing to Ra’Lane’s success would be understanding these beings. One of the first things he changed about his speaking, was he started calling his room, his office, since it seemed more appropriate.
Ra’Lane was constantly moving, getting books, returning books, or moving the piles of books he had gathered in his “office”. He had gone so far as to almost completely remove the walls from sight, creating new walls out of old books and elaborate descriptions of the world he now lived in. He had located a series of books known as encyclopedias, and had begun reading them cover to end, stopping only to gather more books on a subject that interested him. Thus he ended up with enough books to create a second wall, due to his interest in everything. Soon, he was ready to start making summaries to be sent to Namaesti.
One thing that caused him much strife was the concept of physics and electricity. He had spent much time trying to figure out how such a force could exist. The equations and theories were impossible for him to comprehend at first, not that he didn’t try. Finally, he traced the concepts back to basic math, and had to stop himself from working his way up, since he had more pressing issues to take care of.
Switching directions, he studied the cultures of the races that lived here. The religions fascinated him, concepts on various government types bewildered him, and the distribution of power was unheard of. He read through John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Voltaire, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, and nameless others. He analyzed old historical documents, taking extra time on the Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and other moral documents. The idea of a society not based on physical power or which clan you were in, was completely foreign to him. Beginning in the various subjects of importance, he opened up several journals and started writing, he had work to do, and it was not just too waste time.
