Those brown eyes narrowed dangerously as he starred out into the dead and desolate city before him. How strange this place was, how foreign. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before, nothing about it was natural, nothing about it embraced the world around. It was built up of metal and glass, but what? Why make so much of your world be of glass? Why risk so much like that? Simply put, the assassin's outlook of this new place could easily be summed up in one world; delicate.
Why build your world in such a way? As if one rock thrown astray could cause destruction, what happened with ten rocks astray, one hundred? What happened when war came? What happened when siege weapons fired upon this city built of glass? What happened to their delicate little world when the hard fist of the enemy swung upon them. Smiling to himself, his concealed lips curving beneath the cloth of the scarf wrapped about his face he couldn't help but laugh. The answer to what happened was before his very eyes.
Destruction.
Whatever had happened to this world, it had done it's job well. It had left this place mangled and crippled, broken and abandoned. Whatever had ravished through this, Saeren-Nin found himself hoping he did not meet. Whatever had been here was something he had never seen before. Sure, destruction on such a scale was nothing new to him, but this was different. This force had not conquered, nor had it enslaved. It had not taken this place as it's own, it had not forced itself upon these people; it had simply destroyed. It had, simply put, destroyed. Was it wasteful or was it sending a message? Did it not want this city because it wasn't good enough, or was such destruction to be a warning?
"You think too much."
Shaking his head, Saeren-Nin walked away from the edge of the waterfall, his soft leather boots easily finding grip upon the slippery rocks, his feet carrying him swiftly to the small campsite he had created for himself that night. He had no fire lit, which was obviously a good idea. He had no idea what creatures wondered this world, he had no idea of their intelligence, of their aggressiveness, and most importantly of their power. It wasn't that Saeren was afraid, it's that he was smart. He understood the difference between bravery and stupidity, he understood the difference between upholding your honor and being a blood-lusting fool.
Nestling his body between to stones, it provided him with a good view of the long climb up to the waterfall, and he was willing to risk this world had little to no creatures that were both capable of flight and big enough to be a threat to him. So with those simple factors in mind the Angel set up his post, his dark eyes starring forward as he prepared himself another sleepless night.
"Sleep means nothing to you..."
Remembering the words of his trainers, the Angel remained still, his breathing coming slowly, deeply. He was relaxed, intune with his own body, and from that slowly sinking into a deeper state of awareness. Shutting off his thoughts, tuning out all those memories that may have caused distractions, he sat there. Eyes blinking in a rhythmic pattern as he sat watch. Then he heard it. Faint at first, but slowly it grew louder and louder.
Crunch. Crash.
Something was coming towards him, something big from the sounds of it. Silently he waited, and just when he was prepared to dismiss the noise and it's faceless owner, the being revealed itself. And Saeren-Nin had to fight the urge to gasp when he laid eyes upon it. The being was massive, it's deformed and mangy body stank of rotting flesh and death. Within it's dripping maw was a bone, a bone look looked slightly humanoid, just as the creature did. In all reality the thing was a Outsider that at one time had been an Outsider, and in it's jaws was the bone of a not so lucky Human. Starring at the thing, Saeren watched those powerful jaws close, and once again heard the noise from earlier.
Crunch.
To a lesser man the sight of the bone splitting, the sight of marrow and fragments spraying would have been too much, but to an Angel it was simply a vision. It was something that happened, an occurrence within a world of a trillion likewise disturbing occurrences. The assassin watched as the arm slid down the throat of the disgusting creature, and he watched as it carefully made it's way across the open ground towards the edge of the waterfall, lapping up the flowing water as it did so.
Slowly the Angel slid up from his place between the two rocks, his motions silently occurring as he went. Gingerly he slipped an arrow from the quiver at his dip, and notching the powerful bow, he drew the string back until the bow sat taunt and ready. His eyes stay focused, starring at the beast and just as it lifted it's head to sniff the air he released. The only noise coming from the sudden twang of his bow string and the soft whizzing noise as the arrow split the air.
Thud.
It struck the being just beneath the chin at a slightly downwards trajectory, the head of the arrow sticking out of the being cheek as it let out a vicious roar. Saeren-Nin fluidly pulled another arrow from the quiver, and as the Outsider raced towards his position between the rocks, he calmly drew the string back, pulling the feathered tip of the arrow to his cheek, and again he released. This time the shaft pounded into the beasts chest, piercing it's right lung and bringing it down to it's knees with a heave. The Angel listened intently, the familiar sound of choking audible as blood pouring into the Outsider's lungs.
And then it died.
Stepping from the rocks, Saeren-Nin slid the bow over his shoulder, and reaching into his cloak, tore his dagger from it's sheath. Kneeling down, he slid the blade between the jaws of the creature and pried them over, his eyes looking upon the multitude of deadly teeth that sat there, all of them looking identical in their ability to tear and destroy flesh. Where these creatures the ones that had brought this place to it's death? Where these the mindless and merciless destroyers he had pondered over only moments ago? Looking down at the beast, Saeren slid the blade back into it's sheath and stood, his dark brown eyes once again looking out into the city.
"What destroyed you?"
