"Momma... why does Max like to fight and I don't?" The young girl asked as she climbed into her mothers lap. The woman brushed a few stray hairs from the girls face. "Cause sweety your different then him." The girl made a face at her mother. "Max says I'm weak so he has to protect me." The mother kissed her daughters forehead gently. "No baby, your not weak. Your just as strong as him, you just don't feel like fighting. There are not many like you in the world. Even less now. You are still so small when you older Ill tell you more." Placing the girl back to the ground and giving her a small tap on her back side. "Go play Lys, a five year old has no need to know suck things."
Gun shots rang loud in the night sky, her mothers voice yelling to her older brother. Lys stretched her arms on either side of her brothers head. In a vein attempt to reach for her mother as her brother carried her off to what he thought was safety. "Shh Lys shh.... Their gonna find us if you don't stop your crying girl."
Lys touched her brother face, watching the color slowly leak away. He growled at her at first. His mind clouded by pain and loss of blood. "I can make it better Maxy. I can help you sleep brother." The young girl laid her head on her brother chest. Stroking his cheek softly. "Shh Maxy shhh... you gonna go see momma. Don't worry about me Maxy. Momma said I was strong like you." The growls slowly died down and then the whimpers became quiet. She lifted her head, looking into his eyes. They held only an edge of the sadness they did before she touched him. Kissing him on the forehead, before the last bit of life drained away.
Lys blinked her eyes opened, tears trailing down her face. The morning started as it did normally, with tears on her face. Her hand found the wall next to the bedding she was curled up on. Sitting slowly waiting to see how much pain she still held. Her finger playing lightly over the now fresh scar in her stomach. Taking a deep breath she stood. A glimmer of light in her vision told her where the door was. taking each step carefully to not trip on anything in her path, her hands outstretched waiting to touch the door.
She opened the door and stepped out into the cool hall. Placing her back against the wall, she slid to the floor. "Great Lys, how are we going to find our way about?" Speaking softly to herself. She sniffed the air. Wolves, smoke from a small fire. She placed her hands on the floor, listening to the silence. The small sound of movement further down the hall. Standing back up she rested her hand on the wall walking toward the sound. "Hello?"
