For once clouds didn’t block the sun. Warm light filtered down from the sky undisturbed by the chunks of fluff. The city itself took on the bits of light, at times reflected It off of a broken pain of glass, while at times illuminating the dark interiors of abandoned and under kept structures. One certain parking lot was touched by the rays of the sun heating the pavement. Figures moved across the pavement, most of which without weapons and not all of them in a human shape. Small groups of wolves patrolled around the perimeter of the structure the parking lot belonged to. They skirted around the streets and at times, curved through trash littered alleyways. One certain group seemed more concerned with racing rather than sticking strictly to their patrol. The grey wolf in the leader skirted around a dumpster and a second later bounded over and overturned motorcycle. The two behind it worked hard to keep pace. Muscles compacted and expanded as they moved swiftly from the alley and into the streets.
Trio of wolves then headed towards the mall, once again avoiding obstacles like it was all some game. Cars were rounded or jumped over while the clearest path through the garbage and debris was taken. The grey wolf was still in the lead, keeping a health distance between the two behind it before they came to the parking lot again. Claws clicked on the pavement just before the grey wolf brought itself to a stop and glanced back at its two compatriots pulling up the rear. They came closer and closer until one stopped, but the other kept moving. A red pelt flashed across the pavement until it pounced on the grey.
Both shapes tumbled across the ground with pearly white fangs flashing in the sun. Ears were clamped down on top of their heads as each one fought for superiority over the other. The third wolf simply rested on its haunches watching the sparring session. Both battling wolves refused to give an inch as the grey and red pelts seemed to meld together within the immortal speed movement. Feral growls and snarls came from the pileup one after another.
Then there was a shift in the combat, the grey rammed its shoulder into the red, knocking the other wolf from its feet. That, was a fatal mistake in actual combat and the grey capitalized on this. It bounded onto the fallen wolf with fangs threatening to go for the throat. Even fallen, the red wolf still snarled back refusing to fully accept defeat. Yet the grey leaned its deadly maw down lower trying to instigate the tell tale whine from the red that was the packs “uncle” signal.
“He beat you again Lacy.” Both wolves snapped their heads up. The voice came off from the side from the dark skinned beta. Chiseled muscle was clear on his body as he wore nothing but boots and cargo pants. The top had been left inside his personal accommodations with his pups. He sat on a ruined stone bench with arms crossed, sneaking in as the fight had progressed. Seeing the beta, the grey wolf peeled off, suddenly shaking its body before beginning the shift. Bones snapping and realigning came from his body as his body took its human shape. The shift took nearly a minute, but the now obvious male was getting better. The beta tossed him a pair of shorts he’d been holding.
“He’s right Lace.” The male smirked as he caught the shorts and slipped them on. Then the red wolf shifted, coming out of her own feral form.
“You got lucky Keegan.” She remarked.
“Whatever you say sis” Keegan said as he grinned and turned his eyes to the beta. “Naptime almost over?” He asked.
“Just about. They might already be awake.” Jerome said, speaking of his pups. The grey nodded and moved past the darker skinned wolf, going towards the malls entrance. It had been several months since they were born, nearing a year. Keegan had always been their caretaker when Jerome was away taking care of pack business. Part of the beta thought that Keegan saw them as his little brother and sister, even though he already had one. Lacy’s shift finished and she moved towards the bench. She snatched her own clothes from under it and began slipping them on. Jerome looked up at Lacy, gently hitting her on the shoulder as he stood up. “Don’t take it too hard. I’ve been working with him.”
“I can tell.” She said, pulling hair from inside her shirt. “I saw a bit of you in his style.”
Jerome gave a rare slight smile as he crossed his arms. “Well go get something to eat and relax. I’ll need you with me later tonight.”
Lacy raised an eyebrow looking at him. “What’s up?”
“The earthquake caused some changes to the city, and I’m checking them out. A few others are coming aside you.” Lacy nodded and moved off quickly. Jerome watched her go for a moment before turning his eyes back to the deserted streets of the city. Calmly, he moved to the edge of the parking lot and stared down the endless man made canyons.
