On the top of the simple weapon is the bust of a lion’s head to keep up the ruse.
History: When the name Donovan is spoke to you, what do you think of? Is it a distance friend from long ago, or perhaps a character from a novel you have just recently finished? Possibly, you think of the child of Richard Lenser. Richard Lenser was known noble, born in England but raised in Italy. In his time in Venice, Richard married an Italian woman by the name of Andria Bronovichi. It took two years, but Richard wined and dined the woman until she accepted his offer for her hand. The wedding was held a mere six months after the proposal and after which, Richard entered the ladder of Italian nobles of Venice.
Of course, what do married couples do? What is a major portion of their lives? Children. Richard and Andria were blessed with only three, the twins Gianna and Loretta, born in 1651, and Donovan, born two years later in 1653. The three children were the world to the Lenser’s and they made a point of it by giving them the best care. Another way they used their children, was to show them off at dinner parties or gatherings of the rich people of Venice. Gianna and Loretta were normally dressed alike while Donovan would be dressed to compliment his sisters. Of course, as soon as the boy was old enough to think rationally, it was then that his annoyance of nobles and parties and preset engagements grew. His resistance for attending formal parties landed him in hot water with his parents plenty a time. The rebellion really started at the age of 10, when he continually attempted to sneak away form his parents carriage, and get back home to their estate. While on other occasions, he would literally undress himself in the span of a couple minutes after his mother or attendants left the room.
While Loretta and Gianna only giggle and made small jokes about his rebellious attitude, Richard began to grow tired of it to the point that he threatened to kick the boy out of the house at the age of 16. As much as Donovan hated get togethers, parties, dinners, he agreed to clean up his act if only for a time. He knew that he could not on the streets of Venice alone. So in the next years, Donovan suffered through everything, pasting a fake smile on his lips and a mach joyous attitude on the outside. However, the rebellious boy did see one thing, and that was a certain man that attended the parties with his wife. Every time the couple arrived at a dinner party, celebration or brunch, he was drawn to them. They were magnificent together and had a beauty and elegance about them that was rarely seen in the Italian city.
Over time, Donovan worked up the courage to begin going to them when they arrived. At first, he was sure he’d be rejected or brushed off, because what time could they really want to spend with a teenager? Of course, the moment of truth came and Donovan moved up to the couple, avoiding the other attendees of the gathering. The first to notice him, was the husband. Something about his eyes unsettled Donovan but he was undeterred and pressed on. Secondly, the woman gazed at him, the same disturbing, unsettling look in her eyes. Something about their stare spoke something about their origins, but the teenager simply could not put his finger on it. Since, he could not figure it out, he bluntly ignored it and introduced himself. Donovan expected a rebuttal, but what he didn’t expect was the warm greeting and welcomes he got from the couple. They chatted simply for several minutes and by the end of it, Donovan was invited to spend the rest of the party with the couple until they left for the night. Of course he accepted their offer and finally found a bit of fun In the dull, annoying dinner.
Over time, each party, or gathering, Donovan spent the evenings with the couple, their names being Claudio and Maria. Donovan’s parents simply were finally happy that the boy had found something that he actually liked about the parties they attended. They urged him on willingly to keep up his mingling with the couple. It even got to the point where Donovan was invited to spend some time with them in Rome. It was revealed that the couple held a residence in Rome and occasionally spent some time there. It took several moments of discussion between his parents to finally decide to let him go. In an uncharacteristic show of gratitude, the boy ran out and hugged both of his parents before collecting a his things for the trip.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It was the first day of his time with the couple and it became bluntly apparent that they had no children. Perhaps that is why they had invited him along. Perhaps he gave them a feeling of having a child. In truth, he wasn’t sure and even with knowing for so long, he still could see that disturbing look they both had. Even with him being 19 now, it still unsettled him in a way. Neverthless, Donovan enjoyed each and every moment in Rome, for the couple did not attend pointless parties and such, but only took him on excursions into the countryside or to some inn’s that served the local ale. However, one thing that he did find strange about them, was that they went into sunlight, or dared even let the shining rays touch them. They only ever invited him outside at night, but he did not mind this. The night was truly when most of the fun started.
About nearly a month into his time in Rome, Donovan knew he was overdue back at home, but he simply did not care. He knew his family was still carrying on in their boring life and he was having the time of his own. Of course, something unexpected happened as he was approached by Claudio, the man telling him he had something very important to tell the young adult.
“Donovan, I was waiting to tell you this until we were sure you enjoyed your time here, but.” The pale skinned man paused. “We spoke with your parents before leaving and, we arranged for you to spend a couple years with us. “
Of course Donovan’s eyes widened in shock, but it was not the bad type, but shock of happiness. Of course he accepted what had been given to him, but Claudio was not done with the surprises. At the end of the two year excursion, the boy now was a man of 21 years, and not all too happy to be heading home. However Claudio and Maria offered him a chance to stay permanently. All he had to do was accept their gift. Without thinking much about it, Donovan accepted the offer but was told to go to bed and rest up.
That night, the young man lay in his bed soundly asleep. It was once that both Claudio and Maria were totally sure he was asleep, that they slipped into his room with immortal silence. The woman was the one to do the job. Quickly, without a sound, she slipped into his bed, taking a position next to him. Donovan was suddenly awoken from his sleep by a sharp pain in his neck. At first, his voiced snapped out in agony but Claudio quickly covered his mouth with a firm, cold hand. His eyes were littered with confusion but strangely he did not struggle as he felt the liquid of life being drained from his throat. Yet, just as soon as the pain started it stopped. Maria pulled away and was handed a small blade by Claudio. With speed Donovan had difficulty following she’d slit her wrist and held the lacerated part of her body over his mouth. The young man could feel the crimson blood being dripped into his mouth before a firm command came from Claudio’s mouth.
“Drink.” And that’s exactly what he did. What else could he do? For all he knew, these people that he had spent the better part of two years with, were going to kill him. However, in a few moments, Maria stopped the flow of blood to his mouth, which strangely had actually began to taste appetizing. It was small, but a very slight urge for more had surfaced in the recesses of his mind. Even as he realized this, he began to drift off, suddenly feeling exhausted and tired. Nothing was coming clear to him any longer as all thoughts left his body and he simply slumped into the bed and drifted off.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day he’d woken up, Donovan felt extremely different. He found he’d been moved into the basement. Aaron quickly stood up and looked around the room, but these was mere seconds before he was assaulted by a horrendous amount of scents that sent him back into the bed, covering his nose. It was overwhelming and almost blinded him, but this was just before he registered his vision had improved greatly. He could see in crevices and other locations clearly than he’d been able to for his entire life. Not only that, but he could easily detect the subtle footsteps above him. That was something he should not have been able to detect, but it became clear the footsteps were leading to the basements entrance. The door creaked open, louder than it should have considering the distance he was away from it.
Carefully Donovan watched as Maria and Claudio descended the steps, both not wearing their usual formal attire, but more travel clothing. Clearly, they had done something to him last night and he wanted clear answers about just exactly what.
In a clear show of defense, Claudio raised his hands in a non threatening manner. “We understand you may be somewhat upset, but we’re here to explain exactly what you are now.” Now the words, what, sparked his interest and he simple spoke one word.
“Continue.” And so they did, explaining what they had changed him into, and just exactly what his abilities were. At first, Donovan was filled with shock, unable to speak, but over time, he began to accept and even like what they’d done. They understood him well enough to know that he would enjoy and relish he had been turned into. The only downsides too it were the fact he could never step in daylight again, but that was a minor loss. Alongside that, was the need for blood, but he was reassured that the taste of blood would become like a drug too him. At the end of the entire speech from both Claudio and Maria, Donovan simply grinned and thanks the couple before giving a gracious bow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the next twenty years, Donovan spent him time with Maria and Claudio, traveling Europe and learning to adapt to his new found vampiric heritage. Early on, he developed a rather unique taste for blood, savoring the very feeling and taste of the life sustaining fluid running down his throat. Claudio and Maria noticed he was adept at tracking more or less, and enjoyed the chase more than anything. He became obsessive with the hunt once the prey had been wounded and was actively bleeding. Catching the prey and leeching them dry became a passion for him. This obsession grew until it was severe, which led to rather gruesome results upon his return to Venice with Claudio and Maria.
They were to attend a dinner party that would have his parents and sisters attending. As much as he did not want to go, Donovan wanted to see how time had treated his parents.
All three of them arrived at the dinner party dressed formally. Women and men littered the floor, sipping wine from glasses, awaiting the call for dinner. A piano played nearby while a few couples dance to the music. Donovan on the other hand, hungrily looked over the entire crowd. He could almost hear their heartbeats pumping the blood faster and faster. The dancers snagged most of his attention, so much so that he had to get a firm word from Claudio to keep his distance.
“Donovan. We aren’t here to feast.”
It was at that moment that the young vampire felt the first hint of rebellion for the couple that had sired him. He wanted to feed on every single human in the building and gorge himself on their fluids. Still his eyes scanned carefully, a grin working it’s way onto his lips. The young vampires fang were dangerously close to being revealed before a quite firm snap came from Claudio. “Donovan!” He snapped out of the trance that was being worked over and stared at the man carefully, defiance littering his eyes to its fullest extent. A head gesture from Claudio caused him to look deeper into the crowd, only to see his parents waving him over.”Go see them, and remember what I said.” A final glance from Donovan was given to Claudio before he moved across the room too his parents.
Of course his reaction wasn’t something that Donny’s parents all too much enjoyed. The young vampire found himself caught in a fit of laughter at their look. Old, wrinkly, barely able to move quickly, past youthfulness lost forever. Donovan held a smile filled with taunts as he looked at them both. One simple word left his lips with as much venom as he could muster. “Pathetic.” He grinned and looked around the crowd with his baffled parents staring at him with clear annoyance and shock. This was unknown to Donovan as his eyes caught the sight of a beautiful woman excusing herself from the crowd. The woman receded into the side halls obviously going to the restroom. The young vampire peeled away from his parents and deftly followed her, being careful not to be seen by Claudio or Maria. It wouldn’t hurt for him to get one drink.
Cautiously he moved through he hallways, following the womans divine scent until it stopped at the door she’d went through. Donovan shut the door quietly and moved in without hesitation. His cold hand was clamped over her mouth while his free arm held her in place. It took him mere seconds to bury his fangs into her neck and begin draining her veins. With the first taste of the copper liquid in his mouth his eyes widened immensely, his unique obsession with the taste of blood hitting him fully. His entire focus was on the draining as his hand began to tighten on the woman. He could hear a definite crack as his hand around her mouth began to snap her jaw from the strength applied. An scream ripped from the woman’s throat, muffled by his hand. Donovan was all but lost in a trance before a harsh knock hit the door behind him.
Suddenly, the door flew inward as two men had pushed it open fiercely, which would be their final mistake. Without being done draining the woman completely, Donovan dropped her and turned to the two men wide eyed, his lust for blood not sated. His anger began to rise dangerously as he was interrupted from his process of savoring the life sustaining fluid from the woman. Without hesitation he charged into the two, slamming them harshly into the wall before exiting the room and going to the main atrium. It was at that moment, the massacre began. Donovan had lost it from his meal being interrupted and plowed into the crowd of people, killing all those who failed to escape his attack. Blood began to taint the floor along with numerous bodies, while the doors lay harshly slammed open as those who got away ran for their lives. The whole ordeal lasted no more than five minutes, but Donovan had been sated now and stood amidst the carnage looking around. Maria and Claudio were gone, vanished the moment his rampage had started, but Donovan’s parents had not been so lucky. They lay on the ground, both from wounds in either the neck or chest. They’d been caught in his rampage when everything was black and white, where even his friends would be enemies.
It was at that time he realized that his feeding being interrupted could be a liability, a very major flaw that could possible get him killed given the right situation. He had to make absolutely certain he was alone before going to drain another human being. Alas, he was still a vampire and would survive far beyond what any of the mortals that had gotten away from him could. However, it was time for him to leave. He had no doubt that soldiers would be coming to investigate and possibly kill him. Donovan quickly left the scene and vanished into the night just as the soldiers arrived at the scene of the rampage.
-----------------------------------------------------
Centuries had passed since that night, and now Donovan resided In New York after surviving both wars that had ravaged the world. He only survived the wars by his own luck and skill, coming into large scrapes plenty of times. Some of the larger battles he tried to steer clear of, but others he had no choice but to join in, the fighting to important to just be ignored by him. Fighting in the wars came easy to him, as over the years he had acquired his own combat and survival skills against hunters and certain werewolves that decided to come after him personally. Being over three hundred years old brought it’s own level of experience and know how to the battlefield that he used to the fullest. However, near the end of civilization, Donovan had created himself a cane that was modified to be a rather effective staff as a weapon. The now aged vampire arrived in New York about a week after the vampires had been enslaved. His knowledge of the race Is practically nothing as he walks the streets with no more desire than his next feeding.
