A quick, subtle growl sounded from his throat, but it was snapped off as fast as it had arisen. The sound that usually signified aggression or warning, was non-threatening this time around. His feral side had let that one out and he’d been too slow to stop it. The wolves of the wild would use such soft growls like that that showed a certain amount of trust or acceptance, just as his had done just now. However, the reason for his feral side for doing such at this time confused him. It was the most random of moments for the beast within to do so. Jerome’s steady breathing kept up as he tried to discern what his crafty inner wolf was up too. Either it was trying to put him in more of a sticky situation, or just being the old grump it was used to being. It was possible that Celestina would misinterpret the growl, but he knew for sure that her feisty she wolf side wouldn’t. It would know exactly what the growl meant and could possibly use that information to it’s advantage. This realization only brought Jerome to think his feral side was working to get him into more trouble than he already was.
Nevertheless, Jerome responded with his own little smart mouth comment. “You’re the librarian now? Huh.” He scratched his chin for a moment as if thinking then spoke up again. “Where are your glasses and why isn’t your hair in a bun?” He finished the words with a snarky smile before settling back in his chair. The beta gave off a sigh before resting his eyes back on Celestina. Of course, this was the moment she chose to go into another small sentence of Italian. This alone caused him to narrow his eyes slightly as he worked to possibly translate the words with his very limited Italian knowledge. Evasivo was the easy one, clearly questioning his choice of words about evasion. The other were lost to him. It was like trying to find a needle in a stack of needles. Even in the uncomfortable furniture, the beta was quite at home, even with a she wolf near him that was more on the angry side of things.
Although the next words that left Celestina’s lips caused his joking manner to be set aside. His more serious demeanor took the dominant role as he let his eyes mimic his now changed mood. Trust, that was something serious that needed to be addressed, especially with the coming storm. If she didn’t trust him, then that could be a liability if they were in a life or death situation. It was obvious the beta had to make it clear to her that he was only here to keep her safe and out of harms way. The cards were displayed cleanly in front of him. Celestina was young, inexperienced, and still adjusting to her life as a werewolf. Whatever combat expertise she did have, he assumed was rather small, their battle by the waterfall was proof of this alone. With a single maneuver he had caused her more natural side to back down from the challenge. While necessary, it did give him the information that he needed now.
Slowly Jerome stood up, a collection of dust making a rather small pattern on his back. His silver eyes rested on Celestina’s orbs before he glanced out the window. He caught just a section of the moon as he formulated on how to approach this situation. If he went in too harsh, he would lose her trust all together and probably would never gain it or it would take far too much time for him to get it back. Too light and his point wouldn’t be made and it would have no effect, especially on a woman as strong willed as her. Even his feral side understood the seriousness of the situation. If one did not trust the pack they were in, then that would mean death for the individual. A wolf must trust the pack they were in with their life or it could cause several unfixable problems and would inevitably end in a quick death. Jerome’s own beast within could sense the she wolf within the Italian woman’s yearning to be within a pack, but the womans words had made her reason for not doing so clear. She did not only distrust him, but the pack as well, he could see that now.
The beta sighed quietly and looked at her once more. “ I am only doing my duty. It is my job to keep you safe, alive and breathing. You’ve done a fine job alone for awhile now. “ His eyes flickered with a bit of his more natural, wolf side. “ But you have the pack and myself to help you with that now. You have no need to distrust us when every single one of them would risk their life to keep you alive. That goes double for me.” His dark finger traced along the table, cutting a path through the thick collection of dust. “ I can give you space until you’re ready to fully understand this, but what I can’t do is leave you here alone. I must stay not only because of my position, but because personally it goes against my character.”
